CCR 1

 Question 1

How does your product USE or Challenge conventions?

In my clip, I used the convention of darkness. Darkness is used to build suspense and tension as a high-stakes, illegal activity takes place. Darkness is strongly associated with the night and the night has a strong connotation to evil. Secretive and illegal activities are usually perpetrated at night under the cover of darkness, hidden from others. In this clip, the two characters are kidnapping a young girl in the night hours, covered by darkness, with no people to see the events unroll. The clip starts in darkness, which is not always used, as thrillers often start in the light and shift to darkness, increasing the danger over time. In our clip the darkness shifts to the brighter car park white lights, when the innocent kidnapped girls revealed to the audience.

The convention of weapons is used to build the feeling of tension, as weapons, such as the knife that is wielded by the male kidnapper. The kidnapper is presented as aggressive, which is elevated by the use of the knife as he poses a real threat to all the characters. The knife creates a false sense of confidence. This is shown when he is fixated on the knife, treating it with more care that the other characters. The weapon is given character and value as it bestows a kind of power on its user.

The convention of stereotypical gender reactions is used as the male kidnapper is easily angered and gets aggressive quickly. The female characters are both presented as hysterical and worried. The female kidnapper rushes around shouting, clearly acting erratic as she storms in frantically. This is contrasted with the man who is more calm by comparison, thinking out what his next move is. He has to calm the female kidnapper down, however he shows signs of frustration and anger while she is upset and scared. For the short period which the audience is shown, the kidnapped girl is afraid, scared, freaking out as she screams for help. The male deals with checking that that she was still tied up and incapacitated, while the woman kidnapper can only watch.

The convention of specific colours is used to provoke certain feelings and ideas. The use of red commonly signifies danger through it's connection to blood, fire and other symbols of dangerous things. A red cloth is used when wiping the knife clean of blood. There are two reasons for this. One is that blood, being red, would be less visible on a red rag and the other is that the red rag represents the dangers of the knife being prepared for use. The use of black and the use of dark colours connect with the convention of being hidden as the kidnappers enact their evil plan, not wanting any outside attention. The kidnappers both wear torn and worn clothes, dark in colour, connecting both to the aforementioned theme of darkness and to the idea that they come from a lower status area. This links to how they may be kidnapping a girl with nicer clothes who has most likely come from a better area (higher class home) to get a ransom. Another function of her clothes is the light colour, white and light colours are associated with truth and goodness, being out in the open for all to see. This also comes into play with the colours of lighting. Orange lighting is used in the small, cramped spaces to create a sense of limited space. This is contrasted against the white light of the open car park, showing a transition through a small, cramped, safe place to the open, dangerous world where the dark and light clash.

Another convention I used, was singling of a victim. The kidnappers are portrayed as predatory, enacting their scam together against a single girl. The idea of strength in numbers comes into play as a single, helpless young girl is overpowered and captured against her will by the two (who were not much physically stronger individually).

A convention that was challenged, was the way the kidnappers were easily startled. They seemed to be unready for their situations in many ways. The girl was frantic (kidnapper) and the man was figuring out what they should do next. In some ways they were scared, like the girl, which isn't unheard of in films. The difference is that they start the clip scared, before any problems are even present, showing them as inexperienced.

Question 2.

How does your product engage with audiences?

In my film, there are three main characters: one man, one woman and a young girl. The man and the woman are low status kidnappers whose only intention is to make some money out of the young girl. The dynamic between the kidnappers is a classic dynamic of villain and sidekick (partner). The man is steering the operation, setting out both the plan and roles for himself and the woman. These characters are humanised to the audience as though they are enacting an horrendous act on the girl, they get more screen time and show the audience their emotional states. The most fleshed-out characters is the woman as she is shown a a partner in the scene, but she acts hysterical, worried and scared - all feelings normal people feel. On top of her emotional state, she acts completely on the whims of a man. This effectively creates and empathetic response from the audience as she is presented as a puppet who doesn't function without the man who has used and corrupted her.

The man acts as the superior in the clip. What I mean by this is, he commands his "partner" around and he uses the girls for his personal gain, irrespective of the consequences and impacts of his crimes. He is portrayed as the antagonist in every sense. He is shown as being controlling of his partner, who he disregards, and in a demanding tone, tells her what to do more like and underling. He mainly focuses on his own interests, alienating him from any audience empathy, as he acts only on what he wants and what suits his own interests. His character is only humanised through a split second of angry outburst as he tries to get his plan moving forward. He treats the young girl like nothing more than a product to be traded for a profit, not as a living, sentient girl.

The third character, the young girl is what gives the tension and meaning to the clip. The girl is not fleshed out as a character, but rather as an idea or representation. Almost anybody watching could be in her shoes, at the mercy of dangerous individuals (criminals), hopelessly outnumbered and outmatched. The audience automatically takes the place of the young girl trying to figure out what is going through her head.

In this clip, the audience follows two poor thug-like characters who are shown as low class in status. These two characters choose a much younger, vulnerable girl to abduct. She is shown to be in a higher class to them as she is dressed in more quality, higher fashion clothes compared to the two characters abducting her. They intend to use her to get a ransom from her guardians/parents.

The clip starts by showing the female kidnapper rushing into a dimly lit room to meet her accomplice. She is clearly worried as she loudly expresses her concerns to the man. He tells her to calm down and be quiet. He shows clear irritation with her erratic state of mind. She rushes off out of the room. The man contemplates his next actions while cleaning a knife. The clip cuts to him walking into a car park where his car, with the kidnapped girl in the trunk. The clip ends with him driving off into the darkness.

The audience takes on the perspective of no individual character directly. However, the camera follows the actions and mental state of the male kidnapper. Each of the two female characters are only shown in their interactions with the man. Their characters are only shown by their reactions to his actions. The audience is given both first and third person perspectives of the man as we follow his story.

Through voice tones and stressful interactions between characters, the suspense is built to engage the audience. They reveal the states as the young girl's life is used to hook the audience as the clip ends on a cliffhanger. All the interactions between the kidnappers are loud, indicating the situations pressure. The screams of the kidnapped girl link to her panicked nature, drawing the audience into her plight. The quick end after the girls reveal the the girls fate open for the audience's interpretation and ideas.

planning pt3

16:16 (0 minutes ago)

Rampage this name is meant to indicate one thing alone. The film is a medical thriller that focuses on the dangers do you virus that is spreading across  The world with the potential to wipe out humanity. No one on earth has faced a threat this big before, and the virus always seems to become stronger. The definition of rampant is flourishing or spreading insects especially when it is something unwelcome. So the name rampant perfectly sums up the situation of the antagonised virus .

The term rampage has a strong net negative connotation and links to the idea that what ever is rampant must be removed urgently with extreme prejudice. My target audience might is a slightly older group generally 15+ As there are some more mature concepts especially as it is a thriller concepts such as deaths are prevalent along with story as well as well as mental illness search is psychosis  Playing out in the story line due to the virus. The audience will be targeted through web 2.0 by utilising social media platforms to create awareness of our film opening. Sites like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube will be key in distribute seeing to the correct groups the audience. Groups like the i GEN will be keyed to the Promotion of our opening.

Are characters trying to serial typical crazy scientist style that can be seen as a common convention in countless films that are not just limited as to the thriller genre. The inspiration for the character was taken from Iron Man for three Aldridge Killian, a character who seems unstable and eventually succumb to his own experimentation.

We are planning to film in the school science lab to utilise the equipment to create  The aesthetics I have a medical thriller. Do use of the science gear utilises the common convention of medical feels as a world are considered places where people need to be serious and the virus situation makes a clear show of the medical labs importance as time runs out.

The plot my clip utilize the world any virus being identified by our main characters as an eccentric scientist. Suspense is built when he contracts the deadly virus and is running out of time as he races against the clock to find a cure to save everyone. This uses the convention of an eminent danger approaching with limited time.

A key use of props is vital to a medical thriller as a proper lab set up contains things such as medical equipment that creates an underlying  Atmosphere of the film. The connotation of scientific equipment  Is commonly used in the case of a virus that threatens the survival of the human species.

We will be filming  at our school to utilise  the science lab as a key setting for the story as to use the convention of a professional atmosphere. Also we will be shooting at a home as to create a place for our main character to properly express himself in an environment that reflects his way of thinking and character. We will also be shooting in front of a hospital in a news report style piece. A common convention in medical thrillers that inform the audience of the information from the public's perspective while filling in any gaps in the story.

Our opening sequence is based in a world where a new and dangerous virus appears, with the potential to wipe out the human race and throe the  world into chaos like never before. The clip opens up with a rather extrinsic doctor who is observing the new virus and attempting to cure a patient of it. The patient is showing signs of extreme aggression and a clear deterioration of his body is taking place accelerating  at an alarming rate. During the infected individual causing a wound on his hand. He  attempts to sterilise his own wound and not alert any of his fellow staff to his situation believing that he will be OK as he tended to it immediately. He returns home after his shift to carry on his study into the cure  of the virus. After being at home for a time he starts to experience symptoms of the virus as he realises that he is infected with the virus. He begins to experience a mental and physical break down as he battles against time to save himself and all other infected with the virus.

Victim :Mr. Mortem

Reporter: Mrs. Vigilet

Vigilet means to alert which connects to her job as a reporter telling the public about the virus outbreak. She representing  everyone in her field (of reporting) as they let the world know the risk of the virus so that everyone can prepare themselves.

Doctor:Mr.Variables

The doctors last name is Latin for variable which represents how he is the deciding factor between the end or property of the human race, their variable factor.

Technology has been rapidly evolving in every aspect of life especially in the case of films. As for this point in time there is both groups who use the historical films to shoot well other groups are interested with the new digital style filming, and exploring the option is that are being opened up. And the advancements in technology are not just limited to the filming of movies but affect every aspect of production, distribution, marketing, and consumption can you place in the industry on an almost daily basis impacting every employee in the entertainment business.

The production of movies are split into two major categories, classical film a traditional recording medium with over 100 years of history and then you were cutting edge digital method that is taking over the industry. Classical film is a staple of many directors and is scene traditionally as a professional way of shooting movies generally due to the massive cost related to the medium.Weird disadvantages are perceived advantages to this choice of film. The history of film is talked about in the production side by side. film is not always completely reliable as shops may need to be re-shoot the next day as film must be sent out to develop it.Film usually comes in roles that last approximately 10 minutes, this means if an actor gets into a scene they could be stopped prematurely and have to wait for the camera to be re-stocked with fresh film. However according to many film enthusiasts and some digital users film has an almost "romantic atmosphere" (textured). Digital on the other hand it's just beginning to take off as a serious medium unlike film which many agree has reached the limits of development. Digital has a whole world of potential that has not been tapped into yet. Things like CGI and other special effects can all be placed into movies with little (or less) chance of floors. Digital is not held back by the same restrictions of traditional film in way of cost, time usage, and mobility. Digital camera allow for taking multiple re-shoots of the shots with instant play back, showing the camera man and/or director exactly what they are getting. Digital cameras are pretty cheapish and common, and can be bought by about anyone meaning there is more opportunity for novesies to get into filming and making media. It is no longer as risky and difficult to learn how to a certain level is true, but that is because most cameras are personals use (affordable) cameras where major films can afford cutting edge technology. High performance cameras can mimic film or/and control every little aspect such as light and colour gradient.

Distribution of movies have also greatly been influenced by technology advancements. Film traditionally used to be played through a projector onto a cinamer screen. the tape was delicate and could break or fall apart at anytime. As James Cameron said in side to side "The titanic plated for so long in theatres that we actually just, -our prints fell apart", this shows the dangers of relying on traditional film as a piece of work could be lost forever in an instant. Digital is more reliable as the advancements in technology allow copy's of movies to be stored in both cyber space and on more stable hard ware like CD's . Distribution has advanced in the way of connection and communication meaning digital movie files can be sent over and around the world in a moment unlike film tape  they can take weeks to get around the world. film release dates can now be global due to technology.

Marketing and consumption go hand in hand as web 2.0 has allowed the majority of people to get instantaneous updates on any imaginable topic.Social media has brought a new age of connection which can and is utilise advertisements for services and products. Movies can gain huge amounts of attention if properly marketed, also by getting social media influences advertising a movie large potential audiences can be built.the way movies and entertainment is marketed coincides with its consumption as platforms like Netflix allow massive portions of media to be streamed from home a feet that was not able to be accomplished half a century ago, rather people would have to go out  to a cinamer as an event.

CCR Distribution

For my film i would distribute it in the form of social media due to the reach social media has with web 2.0 giving a large portion of people access to it. By putting my short film on a platform like YouTube that is known throughout the world with billions of people using it at some point of another there is a huge potential audience all for no cost. By showing my film on YouTube there is a potential for a following and a chance to gain a profit through add revenue. I can also utilise  Other social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. On these platforms i can target follower as audience by posting the film of parts of the film with a link to You Tube video. Cross media convergence will allow for a bigger potential audience and build a viewer base for future short films.

Treatment

Treatment

his film will be a minimum of 1 minute to a maximum of 2 minutes as required of by AS media. As for location we will utilise the outdoors mainly in New Zealand being the focus. The story takes place in a case style so the out doors approach will allow for effective long distance movement without the problems of confinement.

Conventions being a key part of thrillers are also utilised through :
  • Weapons signifying the high stakes the danger the characters face building suspense.
  • Ruff clothes to show the already worn down characters battling it out for survival ( distances characters from comfort as a whole.
  • the fall into night links to the huge popular convention of darkness ( being unaware of the dangers around you), this also represents a fall into a caose of sorts.
  • Injuries will add to the suspense as the audience questions how long the characters have left (how far can they get before scumming to their injuries).
  • Blood is also a good convention to raise suspense as blood loss is dangerous and the colour red often has a connotation of negativity/emergency.
  • Money will be used to show what is to gain from the situation.
A good example of the style of film we used is the Jason Bourn films, we drew concepts and ideas from the film to produce our clip.

Character names:
  • Sully
  • Ben
  • Nathan
  • Jack
Ideology: the film focuses on the dangerous high stakes situation that stands in the way of the main character who is in possession of a large quantity of money.

The mood and tone of the film is high tension, high suspense action, their is a clear link between the fear of being caught by the antagonises and the idea of running from death its self. the mood is dark with death looming and the tone expresses a feeling of heaviness. this connects to the viewer as the story can be treated as an allegory for death and life.

Themes of death fear and danger are prevalent supported by a wealth of subtle themes such as running from something bigger than yourself as though how intend to take what he has taken chase him.another theme is theft, the idea of taking what you want and then dealing with the consequences.

Mise en scene is covered through the choice to shoot later into the day creating darker lighting setting the aforementioned lighting. the location of open fields also ironically creates the feeling of isolation as their is a limited amount of character interactions , anything can happen an not many people would know.

Symbols:
  • Blood
  • Weapons: knives, guns
  • Cloths
  • Money
Sound will be utilised to set the tone and mood by creating a heavy atmosphere and building as moments of action take place.

Credits and a logo will be placed at the beginning and at the end. Main characters at the beginning and crew at the end.

Audiences and institutions

Audiences and institutions

I find out through the availability of media because the web 2.0 my media consumption has taken a water portion of my time and his augmented the way I perceive the world. The impact of the marriage between media and web 2.0 has assured into a new world Of express media consumption. There are now countless ways to access and consume media of any variety with constant information straight to our devices 24 seven. The variety with constant media such as films and TV had become so accessible due to the technology was so it's like Netflix broadcasting thousands of movies on any smart device. The demand for entertainment has grown to the point that numerous genres that appeal to everyone taste are being added on a daily basis broadening the already numerous options .

There are many ways in which media is consumed in the modern era such as streaming services like Netflix DisneyApple TV etc. In previous times technology such as VHS laserdiscs in the more recent DVD have all the key parts of the home movie experience. When I was younger DVD’s were the main form of home entertainment , this has changed due to improvements in technology and costs involved with production of Currently streaming services hold the most power in the market as they are affordable and offer many options. Streaming services have rendered almost all other forms of media distributionIt's pointless.
My personal experience I have not used a DVD or any other form of film storage in years due to the seemingly obsolete nature of it. DVDs are expensive and usually only contain a single movieNetflix usually costs less for a month subscription then a single new Hollywood blockbuster DVD.COVID-19 has dramatically impact to the world we live in streaming services provide almost endless entertainment without risks of contamination that could be carried by DVDs. Streaming allows last minute decisions without having to think about whichAnd the effects such as cost time with the trental by being factors.

As technology and the means to distribute it evolve there is born more opportunityFor jobs in the industry. Entertainment that will be a crucial part of almost every person in the first world countries. More jobs in places like camera work CGIAnd technical services are benefiting from ever increasing audiences.Trans-audience trends only show growth in support forMajor Hollywood companies such as Disney. PersonallyI have made an effort to look into more in the bass films that are made by smaller production companies. Another major Lee growing market is that of Annamae JapaneseProduced cartoon style films that are often confused for children the teams however many contained complexed stories in artistically expressed medium. Adam is open to all genres including comedy thrillers dramas etcThe use of in different media format allows for things that are usually unable to be conveyed in film light film format it in affective and more realistic manner. Over theFew decades enemy has gone from an obscure niche market outside Japan to a global trend sandwich in the fashion of comic books. Annamae is commonly integrated through things like synergy suchClothing and figures that detect characters from Annamae used asStatement pieces.

Companies such as Disney three vertical and horizontal integration have exorbitant many other companies such as Fox (horizontal intergration) and smaller companies lucus films (vertical intergration ) the exhaust their fan base and built on their known film series.Audience trends show that through this synergy and media convergence bigger companies benefit from the awareness large advertising budgets have. Hollywood blockbuster movies gain more tension than smaller independent films there are people who are more aware of smaller studiosBut largely people don't look for smaller lower budget films in comparison to the mainstream media. Personally I enjoy unusual styles of films with a conventional storytelling or an unusual stories. Independent movies tend to be more artistic as they usually are not intended to make a huge amount of money unlike Disney movies which are geared to to make a profit.

Wednesday, May 20, 2020

Cross-media-convergence and synergy are used to promote media products to the extent that it may cause a film to be successful or a failure. There are many forms of media in this technology driven world such as social media platforms, websites, films, etc... brand awareness is everything so getting more reliable platforms for advertising can boost the size of potential audience members. The average member of society spends multiple hours on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram among others, this provides opportunity through adverts that both overtly and subversively influence people. Cross overs in other forms of media like other films, TV series, and books all provide awareness of characters that fetcher in your film drawing in more potential viewers. this also means if a character is wrongly represented or is linked to negative representation it may negatively affect sales/success of the film.

  • social media platforms reach huge audiences:
(Most films set up social media accounts to build awareness of their film such as the case of hunt for the wilder people did , utilising social media awareness they spread their film idea to build an audience across New Zealand. By creating awareness of the film they where able to gain the support of the public through crowd funding and the New Zealand Film Commission.)

  • Cross media representation builds a fan basis for characters and their actor counter parts:
(Though none of my case study films had spin off series of cross overs ,all of them had the commonality of interviews with the star actors and cast which attracted interest as people heard the processes of the film. whether to learn for personal use or for entertainment as people gained interest in the actors personal lives.)

  • Advertisements through physical media can be vital to capturing attention:
(Every movie on my case study advertised using some for of physical media, everything from flairs to busses printed with huge advertisement. the high budget movies like "The Intern" could afford billboards gaining wider public awareness, in comparison the limited budget from the first launch of the indie film "Before I Wake" which had a limited budget meaning  advertisement was limited severely to posters and filers . )

  • Trailers on sites like YouTube and at the cinema creates anticipation for a film:
(Arguably the best way to gain a following and build interest on a protect, trailers attract attention as they give your audience a look into the film. Every movie now days utilise trailers to build characters public image and showcase the scenery/effects in the film.)

2. Concepts:

Disney is one of the biggest production companies on earth and with that there are many advantages. The huge funds Disney has allows  them to make huge investments and deals that would not otherwise be able by smaller companies. Disney has utilised both horizontal and vertical integration. Horizontal integration is when a businessMerges or takes over another business that is of a similar size to them and example of where Disney has done this is fox entertainment. Originally a few years ago Fox and Disney were both part of the big six a major group ofEntertainment providers that dominated the Hollywood filmmaking industry. Disney has also made use ofVertical integration through buying out companies small than itself such as Lucas entertainment producer of the Star Wars series Pixar studios and many smaller production companies ranging from all parts of production from filming to advertising to sales.Disney has Disney has utilised cross media convergence by taking advantage of its purchase of smaller companies allow it to utilise a wide range of tools and specialisations developed prior to the takeover of those companies.Disney also utilises synergy through places like Disneyland merchandise like toys and clothes to broaden the range of the audience and build a brand as a household them since Disney has a range ofAnd TV shows you provide attainment for all ages. This means there is a range of possibilities such as partnering with musicArtists and literary partners.

Audio operations

In this protect, the main theme that is guiding and informing me on the type of audio that is needed is a combination of loud and quite sounds that create contrast as weapons such as guns grab audience attention the protagonists must go unnoticed in order to hide their position. the sound will be carefully alternated between the communication and weapons firing. non-dietetic music will be used to build up suspense with a high energy, high tempo song leading up to the firing. The convention of building tension using things such as whispering to express the circumstantial danger (life or death) of the situation.

Lingering Shots:
  • Increase suspense by focusing on a character longer than expected, pauses bvvuild tension as the audience begins to worry about what happens next (they will become uncomfortable ).
  • Building anticipation (extra second ).
Fast cuts:
  • Catches the audience off guard.
  • Creates a feeling of panic for the audience as they figure out what going on.
  • Building up to, fast cuts are necessary in order to utilise the full effect of the suspense and then the apex of the story/situation.
  • The audience becomes more aware of their senses.
Music/sound:
  • The sound track must have a build up to create suspense.
  • Drawn out music/sounds that have no melody will create a high tension atmosphere.
Close ups:
  • Allows the audience to empathise with the character by seeing their reaction (on their faces and body language ).
  • Limited information can be seen at a time creating a combination of suspense and tension as the audience must watch seeing every detail. (this works if you want the audience to draw their own conclusion). Do not rely on this technique to much.
Be aware of negative space:
  • Create a  balance between location and characters, giving context to the situation that happens in the clip.
  • Symbolism in the atmosphere or even foreshadowing.
  • Control over space  can  create a sense of claustrophobia or minimise the character through perspective.
Action thriller

Camera angles:

High angles minimise characters making them seem weaker, inferior, and set to fail. On the the other hand low angles enlarge a characters size making them seem powerful and triumphant (confident).

Time distortion:

Erratic speeding up and slowing down of time can create a sense of unease as the viewer feels a loss of control trapped in the story. Suspense is built in pauses and tension is built characters are forced into dangerous situations

People, especially the i-gen, want to connect with their cultures, so Social Media allows things like trends, on a world scale, or films to be spread through reviews.

Q5.         List the emotional motivations that drive i-gens to watch movies at the cinemas and what in general do they like about it?

A5.         I-gens need connection, a feeling of being part of something, so cinema provides an almost intimate setting where individuals meet to go through a story together. This provides a place where there is an emotional connection with other people.

Q6.         Comment on why i-gens opt to watch movies online at home.

A6.         Life in the modern world seems to get busier by the day. People are always in a rush to do things and get things done, being able to stay in the comfort of your own home creates a sense of relief from the outside world. People also like to multi-task, allowing them to do other things and stop the movie, and rewind if they want.

Q7.         What do the i-gens say is negative about the cinema experience?

A7.         As the average i-gen immerses themself into a high-paced life, convenience plays a big part in their day-to-day activities. The cinema provides a great experience, but along with the good comes the bad as inconveniences, like not being able to talk, not being comfortable as you may like, and high costs compete.

Q8.         How should i-gens be marketed to if you are trying to get them to watch your film?

A8.         I-gens love two things: community and good causes (also convenience), so in order to market to them you need to couple these things. An interesting idea would be an unconventional place to set up a sort of pop-up cinema, to immerse the audience, and should be of relevance to the story, if possible. Cheaper ticket prices or emphasising on things like group deals in order to gain more viewers. Utilising Social Media and word-of-mouth, creates great awareness of the film. If there is anything to connect the film or the events / production staff with the community it can attract good attention.

Q9.         How do i-gens prefer to engage with media and what do they want out of a media?

A9.         The i-gen wants convenience and connection; technology provides this. A film provides a place for friends to connect with each other over characters and the efficiency of modern technology facilitates this with ease (this means no tension and stress needed).

Audience Trends

CLASSWORK:

Audience Trends

Technology is an essential in society, it is always evolving and developing to suit the public’s needs and wants. In the film industry, technology is everything, affecting distribution, quality of films, and even what can be accomplished in a film, like CGI and stunts. Media consumption is affected by multiple influences, included, but not limited to availability, price, quality, etc.

We, as a society, have always valued convenience. In media this took the form of being able to watch films at home. Originally movies could only be seen in cinemas, in black and white, but society began to demand portability and lowered prices, causing business opportunities for inventors who created new machines to match the demand. The first of these major breakthroughs in this type of technology was the invention of VHS, which meant that it was possible to watch films at home. Almost anyone in the First World could get one and buying films was not overly expensive.

After VHS, a Japanese invention in the 1970s, Laser Discs, the predecessor to the DVD came out in the late 1970s. These forms of technology both stayed relevant until DVDs and Blue Ray came along. However, as of now Streaming Services have now ushered movie watchers around the world into a new era of film consumption, dominating the market. Streaming Services such as Netflix contain, what seems to be endless hours of entertainment, all for one fixed monthly price, and they can be viewed Smart Device, seemingly the ultimate convenience. This is evidenced by almost all DVD stores closing, globally and huge growth in Streaming Services. Netflix has gained 15.8 million subscribers in the last year and saw a quarterly revenue of $5.77 billion. This corresponds to the pandemic Covid-19 as people would not be able to go out and get a DVD, but Streaming Services are contactless and seemingly endless.

Social Media has become a vital part of Society nowadays, almost everyone has either Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Companies such as Warner Brothers, Disney and more have utilised the aforementioned platforms to advertise films. According to the company “Broadband Search” who conducted research in 2020 into how much time the average person spends on Social Media, with the result showing it to be 2 hours and 4 minutes, 8.586% of their day. With the power to advertise on these platforms, filmmakers have huge amounts of influence and reach countless potential viewers. Films are produced year-round with a surprising amount of films never seeing success, the major blockbusters go to film with a DVD release a few months later. More films are now going straight to DVD or Streaming Services, especially with the Covid-19 situation. More and more movies are going straight to Streaming Services, as it is cheaper and easier for film makers, as they can let companies like Netflix do the majority of advertising, and DVDs don’t need to be made, transported and put at risk of being damaged.

CREATING SUSPENSE

In Clip One, created by Jay Moussa-Mann, she talks about how to create suspense through film features and technique. A key point that was made in the clip is, information in the beginning of the story is needed to build suspense. Jay went on to elaborate on giving the audience a dangerous situation or character to build suspense. Jay then goes on to explain how, through long pauses of close calls, the audience ends up on the edge of their seat, anticipating each next step or action the protagonist takes. She then goes on to explain that when creating suspense, a good, relatable protagonist is needed or at least some character the audience can sympathies with. Through fleshing out characters, the audience views them as more real, making the danger seem more real.
\
In Clip Two there is a focus on Steven Spielberg building suspense in his movies, such as “Jaws”, and “The Color Purple”. Spielberg utilizes the shots perspective, emphasizing the size of objects that are important plot devices. Through quick-cut edits and the size emphasis of important objects, it creates a build-up of tension and suspense as the audience tries to guess what path the film will take. Spielberg also builds the atmosphere of the scene by using music or to affect the emotive response of the audience to a film, or the lack of music to create an “eerie vibe”. Panning to show distance between the character in focus and danger also create suspense.

Clip Three focuses on Hitchcock and the use of suspense in his movies as well as his theory on suspense. Hitchcock is a key character in the thriller genre, coming up with theories such as the Bomb Theory. The premises for the Bomb Theory is: if a bomb suddenly goes off, it will cause a shock that lasts a few seconds, but if the audience sees the bomb (with a timer for example) they know the danger in the situation, but can’t interfere with the characters, building suspense. The suspense comes from a place of not knowing whether the characters will survive. Hitchcock was quoted as saying, “It is indispensable that the public be made perfectly aware of all the facts involved. Otherwise there is no suspense”. Hitchcock shows how cutting between the threat (information given) and the character gives suspense to the audience as it can highlight a potential encounter. He utilized drawing out a scene as it is climaxing to build further suspense.

"Paprika"
  • In Paprika's opening sequence the creators use a combination of reality and fantasy aspects that elude to the nature of the film , this connects to the importance of media inside the film and allows strong use of symbolism.
  • In the clip conventions such as mirrors are used to help convey the parallel nature of the two distinct worlds ( of dreams and reality) while allowing the viewer to get a idea of how the character thinks.
  • The use of fourth wall breaks when the character stairs directly at the viewer give a sence of the character being real either getting an uneasy response or a seance of empathy from the viewer.
"Sucker punch"
  • The film utilizes the use of a voice over (non-diabetic) in the sequence , this allows the protagonist to set the stage for the events of the film and set the theme /atmosphere for the style of the film.
  • The opening sequence tells the story of the characters past giving her a backstory and lets the viewer understand the story from her perspective giving context to her actions. The information given in the  opening sequence gives context to what and why things are happening throughout the film providing the motivation for all parties involved.
  • The conventions of camera angles was used to portray the power of the antagonist through the use of low angles (this made him seem bigger and more powerful), and the protagonist is contrasted as weaker in the opening sequence (before character growth)  through lower high angles (minimizes her). The angles are only used in the situation where they are alone (the younger sister was there), when they are at the funeral the angles change back to mid showing they where not in danger at that time.
"Skyfall"

  • The use of imagery utilizing things that should seem innocent such as clowns and school buses are twisted into a tool that shows dander and creates fear, this is a convention commonly use in thrillers and horror movies.
  • A interesting use of lighting going against common thriller conventions is the filming in broad day light which is used to portray the villain as bold meaning no one is ever truly safe from him.
"Spectre"

  • Imagery plays a key part of the clip strongly connecting large aspects of the film through visual metaphors such as the symmetrical movement of the dancers in the opening leading to the point of the carefully planed out movement of the characters.
  • The lighting is quite interesting in that  there is an equal use of light and dark utilizing the idea of how some things are meant to be known in the story while others will be kept in the dark.
  • The music sets the tone for the film as it talks about key ideas such as "risking it all" this influences the viewer and creates a atmosphere of not the stereotypical high tension music but rather an emotionally dramatic peace that indicates some sort of inevitable loss.
"Skyfall"
  • Strong symbolism is used to portray the danger of the story through multiple uses of blood and weapons , also a common theme of grave stones representing fatality and the mortality of the main character.
  • The lighting in this opening sequence creates a story in an of its self  . the protagonist falls into water where he begins to sink as he goes deeper it becomes darker showing him becoming lost. The convention of darkness is a metaphor for the unknown and the dangers that hide within them , by the opening scene  progressively becoming darker it tells the story of  how he will become entwined with hidden dangers.
  • the convention of camera angles are used as there almost always seems to be a high angle shot of him helplessly descending, this links to how high angle shots minimize the character making him seem more vulnerable to his dangerous surroundings.
