CCR 1

 Question 1

How does your product USE or Challenge conventions?

In my clip, I used the convention of darkness. Darkness is used to build suspense and tension as a high-stakes, illegal activity takes place. Darkness is strongly associated with the night and the night has a strong connotation to evil. Secretive and illegal activities are usually perpetrated at night under the cover of darkness, hidden from others. In this clip, the two characters are kidnapping a young girl in the night hours, covered by darkness, with no people to see the events unroll. The clip starts in darkness, which is not always used, as thrillers often start in the light and shift to darkness, increasing the danger over time. In our clip the darkness shifts to the brighter car park white lights, when the innocent kidnapped girls revealed to the audience.

The convention of weapons is used to build the feeling of tension, as weapons, such as the knife that is wielded by the male kidnapper. The kidnapper is presented as aggressive, which is elevated by the use of the knife as he poses a real threat to all the characters. The knife creates a false sense of confidence. This is shown when he is fixated on the knife, treating it with more care that the other characters. The weapon is given character and value as it bestows a kind of power on its user.

The convention of stereotypical gender reactions is used as the male kidnapper is easily angered and gets aggressive quickly. The female characters are both presented as hysterical and worried. The female kidnapper rushes around shouting, clearly acting erratic as she storms in frantically. This is contrasted with the man who is more calm by comparison, thinking out what his next move is. He has to calm the female kidnapper down, however he shows signs of frustration and anger while she is upset and scared. For the short period which the audience is shown, the kidnapped girl is afraid, scared, freaking out as she screams for help. The male deals with checking that that she was still tied up and incapacitated, while the woman kidnapper can only watch.

The convention of specific colours is used to provoke certain feelings and ideas. The use of red commonly signifies danger through it's connection to blood, fire and other symbols of dangerous things. A red cloth is used when wiping the knife clean of blood. There are two reasons for this. One is that blood, being red, would be less visible on a red rag and the other is that the red rag represents the dangers of the knife being prepared for use. The use of black and the use of dark colours connect with the convention of being hidden as the kidnappers enact their evil plan, not wanting any outside attention. The kidnappers both wear torn and worn clothes, dark in colour, connecting both to the aforementioned theme of darkness and to the idea that they come from a lower status area. This links to how they may be kidnapping a girl with nicer clothes who has most likely come from a better area (higher class home) to get a ransom. Another function of her clothes is the light colour, white and light colours are associated with truth and goodness, being out in the open for all to see. This also comes into play with the colours of lighting. Orange lighting is used in the small, cramped spaces to create a sense of limited space. This is contrasted against the white light of the open car park, showing a transition through a small, cramped, safe place to the open, dangerous world where the dark and light clash.

Another convention I used, was singling of a victim. The kidnappers are portrayed as predatory, enacting their scam together against a single girl. The idea of strength in numbers comes into play as a single, helpless young girl is overpowered and captured against her will by the two (who were not much physically stronger individually).

A convention that was challenged, was the way the kidnappers were easily startled. They seemed to be unready for their situations in many ways. The girl was frantic (kidnapper) and the man was figuring out what they should do next. In some ways they were scared, like the girl, which isn't unheard of in films. The difference is that they start the clip scared, before any problems are even present, showing them as inexperienced.

Question 2.

How does your product engage with audiences?

In my film, there are three main characters: one man, one woman and a young girl. The man and the woman are low status kidnappers whose only intention is to make some money out of the young girl. The dynamic between the kidnappers is a classic dynamic of villain and sidekick (partner). The man is steering the operation, setting out both the plan and roles for himself and the woman. These characters are humanised to the audience as though they are enacting an horrendous act on the girl, they get more screen time and show the audience their emotional states. The most fleshed-out characters is the woman as she is shown a a partner in the scene, but she acts hysterical, worried and scared - all feelings normal people feel. On top of her emotional state, she acts completely on the whims of a man. This effectively creates and empathetic response from the audience as she is presented as a puppet who doesn't function without the man who has used and corrupted her.

The man acts as the superior in the clip. What I mean by this is, he commands his "partner" around and he uses the girls for his personal gain, irrespective of the consequences and impacts of his crimes. He is portrayed as the antagonist in every sense. He is shown as being controlling of his partner, who he disregards, and in a demanding tone, tells her what to do more like and underling. He mainly focuses on his own interests, alienating him from any audience empathy, as he acts only on what he wants and what suits his own interests. His character is only humanised through a split second of angry outburst as he tries to get his plan moving forward. He treats the young girl like nothing more than a product to be traded for a profit, not as a living, sentient girl.

The third character, the young girl is what gives the tension and meaning to the clip. The girl is not fleshed out as a character, but rather as an idea or representation. Almost anybody watching could be in her shoes, at the mercy of dangerous individuals (criminals), hopelessly outnumbered and outmatched. The audience automatically takes the place of the young girl trying to figure out what is going through her head.

In this clip, the audience follows two poor thug-like characters who are shown as low class in status. These two characters choose a much younger, vulnerable girl to abduct. She is shown to be in a higher class to them as she is dressed in more quality, higher fashion clothes compared to the two characters abducting her. They intend to use her to get a ransom from her guardians/parents.

The clip starts by showing the female kidnapper rushing into a dimly lit room to meet her accomplice. She is clearly worried as she loudly expresses her concerns to the man. He tells her to calm down and be quiet. He shows clear irritation with her erratic state of mind. She rushes off out of the room. The man contemplates his next actions while cleaning a knife. The clip cuts to him walking into a car park where his car, with the kidnapped girl in the trunk. The clip ends with him driving off into the darkness.

The audience takes on the perspective of no individual character directly. However, the camera follows the actions and mental state of the male kidnapper. Each of the two female characters are only shown in their interactions with the man. Their characters are only shown by their reactions to his actions. The audience is given both first and third person perspectives of the man as we follow his story.

Through voice tones and stressful interactions between characters, the suspense is built to engage the audience. They reveal the states as the young girl's life is used to hook the audience as the clip ends on a cliffhanger. All the interactions between the kidnappers are loud, indicating the situations pressure. The screams of the kidnapped girl link to her panicked nature, drawing the audience into her plight. The quick end after the girls reveal the the girls fate open for the audience's interpretation and ideas.

planning pt3

16:16 (0 minutes ago)

Rampage this name is meant to indicate one thing alone. The film is a medical thriller that focuses on the dangers do you virus that is spreading across  The world with the potential to wipe out humanity. No one on earth has faced a threat this big before, and the virus always seems to become stronger. The definition of rampant is flourishing or spreading insects especially when it is something unwelcome. So the name rampant perfectly sums up the situation of the antagonised virus .

The term rampage has a strong net negative connotation and links to the idea that what ever is rampant must be removed urgently with extreme prejudice. My target audience might is a slightly older group generally 15+ As there are some more mature concepts especially as it is a thriller concepts such as deaths are prevalent along with story as well as well as mental illness search is psychosis  Playing out in the story line due to the virus. The audience will be targeted through web 2.0 by utilising social media platforms to create awareness of our film opening. Sites like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube will be key in distribute seeing to the correct groups the audience. Groups like the i GEN will be keyed to the Promotion of our opening.

Are characters trying to serial typical crazy scientist style that can be seen as a common convention in countless films that are not just limited as to the thriller genre. The inspiration for the character was taken from Iron Man for three Aldridge Killian, a character who seems unstable and eventually succumb to his own experimentation.

We are planning to film in the school science lab to utilise the equipment to create  The aesthetics I have a medical thriller. Do use of the science gear utilises the common convention of medical feels as a world are considered places where people need to be serious and the virus situation makes a clear show of the medical labs importance as time runs out.

The plot my clip utilize the world any virus being identified by our main characters as an eccentric scientist. Suspense is built when he contracts the deadly virus and is running out of time as he races against the clock to find a cure to save everyone. This uses the convention of an eminent danger approaching with limited time.

A key use of props is vital to a medical thriller as a proper lab set up contains things such as medical equipment that creates an underlying  Atmosphere of the film. The connotation of scientific equipment  Is commonly used in the case of a virus that threatens the survival of the human species.

We will be filming  at our school to utilise  the science lab as a key setting for the story as to use the convention of a professional atmosphere. Also we will be shooting at a home as to create a place for our main character to properly express himself in an environment that reflects his way of thinking and character. We will also be shooting in front of a hospital in a news report style piece. A common convention in medical thrillers that inform the audience of the information from the public's perspective while filling in any gaps in the story.

Our opening sequence is based in a world where a new and dangerous virus appears, with the potential to wipe out the human race and throe the  world into chaos like never before. The clip opens up with a rather extrinsic doctor who is observing the new virus and attempting to cure a patient of it. The patient is showing signs of extreme aggression and a clear deterioration of his body is taking place accelerating  at an alarming rate. During the infected individual causing a wound on his hand. He  attempts to sterilise his own wound and not alert any of his fellow staff to his situation believing that he will be OK as he tended to it immediately. He returns home after his shift to carry on his study into the cure  of the virus. After being at home for a time he starts to experience symptoms of the virus as he realises that he is infected with the virus. He begins to experience a mental and physical break down as he battles against time to save himself and all other infected with the virus.

Victim :Mr. Mortem

Mortem is Latin for death alluding to the way he spreads death to the main characters Mr. Mortem is destine to die and to kill though around him.

Reporter: Mrs. Vigilet

Vigilet means to alert which connects to her job as a reporter telling the public about the virus outbreak. She representing  everyone in her field (of reporting) as they let the world know the risk of the virus so that everyone can prepare themselves.

Doctor:Mr.Variables

The doctors last name is Latin for variable which represents how he is the deciding factor between the end or property of the human race, their variable factor.

Technology has been rapidly evolving in every aspect of life especially in the case of films. As for this point in time there is both groups who use the historical films to shoot well other groups are interested with the new digital style filming, and exploring the option is that are being opened up. And the advancements in technology are not just limited to the filming of movies but affect every aspect of production, distribution, marketing, and consumption can you place in the industry on an almost daily basis impacting every employee in the entertainment business.

The production of movies are split into two major categories, classical film a traditional recording medium with over 100 years of history and then you were cutting edge digital method that is taking over the industry. Classical film is a staple of many directors and is scene traditionally as a professional way of shooting movies generally due to the massive cost related to the medium.Weird disadvantages are perceived advantages to this choice of film. The history of film is talked about in the production side by side. film is not always completely reliable as shops may need to be re-shoot the next day as film must be sent out to develop it.Film usually comes in roles that last approximately 10 minutes, this means if an actor gets into a scene they could be stopped prematurely and have to wait for the camera to be re-stocked with fresh film. However according to many film enthusiasts and some digital users film has an almost "romantic atmosphere" (textured). Digital on the other hand it's just beginning to take off as a serious medium unlike film which many agree has reached the limits of development. Digital has a whole world of potential that has not been tapped into yet. Things like CGI and other special effects can all be placed into movies with little (or less) chance of floors. Digital is not held back by the same restrictions of traditional film in way of cost, time usage, and mobility. Digital camera allow for taking multiple re-shoots of the shots with instant play back, showing the camera man and/or director exactly what they are getting. Digital cameras are pretty cheapish and common, and can be bought by about anyone meaning there is more opportunity for novesies to get into filming and making media. It is no longer as risky and difficult to learn how to a certain level is true, but that is because most cameras are personals use (affordable) cameras where major films can afford cutting edge technology. High performance cameras can mimic film or/and control every little aspect such as light and colour gradient.

Distribution of movies have also greatly been influenced by technology advancements. Film traditionally used to be played through a projector onto a cinamer screen. the tape was delicate and could break or fall apart at anytime. As James Cameron said in side to side "The titanic plated for so long in theatres that we actually just, -our prints fell apart", this shows the dangers of relying on traditional film as a piece of work could be lost forever in an instant. Digital is more reliable as the advancements in technology allow copy's of movies to be stored in both cyber space and on more stable hard ware like CD's . Distribution has advanced in the way of connection and communication meaning digital movie files can be sent over and around the world in a moment unlike film tape  they can take weeks to get around the world. film release dates can now be global due to technology.

Marketing and consumption go hand in hand as web 2.0 has allowed the majority of people to get instantaneous updates on any imaginable topic.Social media has brought a new age of connection which can and is utilise advertisements for services and products. Movies can gain huge amounts of attention if properly marketed, also by getting social media influences advertising a movie large potential audiences can be built.the way movies and entertainment is marketed coincides with its consumption as platforms like Netflix allow massive portions of media to be streamed from home a feet that was not able to be accomplished half a century ago, rather people would have to go out  to a cinamer as an event.
